Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
So many guides on scrapbooking take the decorative-papers-and-stickers approach, and the resulting pages tend to have a sameness to them. But Vanessa- Ann's Better Scrapbooking treads a more unique path: 12 good-looking projects, each one a complete memory album in itself--from covers to interior pages--devoted to a different technique. Emboss and gold-leaf a wedding album, decoupage a tribute to family history, rubber stamp a collection of nature photos, tole paint a salute to the holidays, faux finish a celebration of the home, and more.

Excellent directions begin with an overview of the album design and the technique in question--plus a supply list--then proceed to step-by-step instructions for creating a few individual pages, and conclude with methods for embellishing and binding the cover. Most projects use albums you can buy as a base for further adornment, but in some cases the scrapbooks are built from scratch; for example, using card stock cut into intriguingly irregular shapes, or cardboard made into an accordion-fold book. Novice scrapbookers will find innovative ideas that go beyond the simple layouts of introductory books on the subject. --Amy Handy --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal
New tools and materials have been developed for the exploding memory-book market, and it is useful to have instructions for using them. Here are two guides to the craft techniques involved in creating one's own memory scrapbook. Carter's book uses a question-and-answer format with illustrations and examples. The Vanessa-Ann book has chapters and sample projects for techniques such as stitching on paper and using computer graphics. Public libraries will welcome both.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not that great a buy, October 25, 2000
This review is from: Better Scrapbooking (Paperback)
Though this book looked great on "paper," it fell way short of what was promised. I didn't learn anything new from this book or see anything much different from other scrapbooking guides. Lots of the same old techniques were covered, and I wasn't even that impressed with the way those techniques were handled. I guess if you have never done any scrapbooking -- or if you've never SEEN a scrapbook -- this book might impress you, but it didn't impress me. I wish I hadn't spent money on this one.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice presentation of old techniques., June 10, 2001

For the novice scrapbooker, this book will be a great help. For myself, I give it only 3 stars because it mostly contains ideas for your pages that have been covered before, such as embossing, stamping, stitching on paper, stickers, etc. I did find the chapters on tole painting on pages and collage to be insightful, but not worth the price of the entire book. One nice thing about the layout is that the instructions are very clear and easy to follow, so if you are new to scrapbooking and looking for ways to jazz up your pages, this book might be the ticket!
