Editorial Reviews

Review
John G. Nicolay had trained as a journalist had known Abraham Lincoln in Sprinfield, and served in the Lincoln administration as chief White House secretary from 1861 to 1865. He eventually published a ten-volume biography on Lincoln (which he co-wrote with John Hay). As part of the preparation for the biography, Nicolay interviewed those in Springfield and in Washington who had known Lincoln. Now over 100 years later, 39 of those never-before-published interviews appear for the first tim. Nicolay interviewed such Springfield friends of Lincoln as his first two law partners, John Todd Stuart and Stephen T. Logan. At the Illinois capital in June and July 1875, he talked to a number of others, including Orville H. Browning (U. S. Senator and Lincoln's close friend and advisor for over 35 years) and Ozias Hatch (Lincoln's political ally and Springfield neighbor). Four years later Nicolay returned briefly and spoke with John W. Bunn (a young political "insider" from Springfield at the time Lincoln was elected president). Briefer and more narrowly focused than the Springfield interviews, the Washington interviews deal with the formation of Lincoln's cabinet, his relations with Congress, his behavior during the war, his humor, and his grief. (Robert Todd Lincoln tells of his father's despair at Robert E. Lee's escape after the Battle of Gettysburg. ) Michael Burlingame has done a masterful job in selecting and editing these hidden treasures of first-person narratives on the life and person of Abraham Lincoln. The insights revealed in An Oral History of Abraham Lincoln about Lincoln's marriage, his attitudes toward the issues and personalities of the day, and the controversies that continually surrounded his presidency are invaluable. -- Midwest Book Review

Review

Burlingame’s editorial work is solid. . . . Lincoln scholars should find this volume useful because of the information it brings together in one place and stimulating because of the larger questions it raises concerning the use of historical evidence.” —Civil War History

“[T]his collection is important and contains as much new information on Lincoln as anyone is apt to find at this late date. I commend [Burlingame] for bringing these interviews to light.”—The Journal of Southern History

“Who Lincoln was and who people remember him to be are often diametrically opposed. It is books like this . . . that are must-reads for everyone interested in Lincoln. . . . [A]n excellent contribution.”—Illinois Historical Journal

“Burlingame has done a masterful job in selecting and editing these hidden treasures of first-person narratives on the life and person of Abraham Lincoln. The insights revealed . . . are invaluable.”—Midwest Book Review

5.0 out of 5 stars Firsthand memories of Lincoln, August 23, 2007
An invaluable collection of recollections by persons who knew Lincoln before and during the presidency. The stories were recorded in interviews conducted by John Nicolay, one of Lincoln's White House secretaries. This book will probably be enjoyed more by specialists than by general readers. Five-star rating is based on book's usefulness to researchers.
