The Cape Verde Islands have acquired unusual political and strategic significance in Africa because of the nationalist party, the PAIGC, and its notable founder, Amilcar Babral, who led a protracted armed struggle against Portuguese colonialism. About the Author
Richard Lobban is a Professor of Anthropology and the Director of the Program of African and Afro-American Studies at Rhode Island College. Marlene Lopes, a fourth generation Cape Verdean-American, is Assistant Professor and Special Collections Librarian at Adams Library at Rhode Island College.
