From Booklist
Compiled by two Middle Eastern scholars, this alphabetically arranged volume contains entries on personalities, institutions, organizations, historical events, and documents that "define the political life of the Jewish State." A companion to Historical Dictionary of Israel (Scarecrow, 1992), the volume is current through February 2000.Entries range in length from one paragraph to several pages for Palestine Liberation Organization; Shamir, Yitzhak; and Syria, among others, and contain numerous cross-references. An excellent feature is the bibliographies following most entries, greatly enhancing the reference value of the work. These bibliographies can be extensive; for some entries, such as Arab-Israeli conflict and Six Day War (1967), the bibliographic portions are longer than the narratives. In addition, the volume includes a chronology and a variety of useful tables, such as lists of prime ministers and cabinet ministers, and immigration and population statistics. The work concludes with a general bibliography. Diligently researched and usefully organized, this volume is an outstanding ready-reference source. Highly recommended for public and academic libraries. RBB
