Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
In a literal overview of the world, Earth from Above: 365 Days presents a resplendent view of our complex home. Each new day reveals another breathtaking, and sometimes heartbreaking, image from the sky: an endless field of Kenyan flamingos, the crowded streets of Tokyo, the crisscrossing highways of Los Angeles, or a misty blue lagoon in Iceland. Turn the page and find yet another absorbing view. Each of the 365 pictures is monumental and imparts one more mind-blowing facet to our elaborate planet. Every image is accompanied by a brief socially conscious text. Descriptions of nature's bounty and wrath, along with human impact both good and bad, run throughout. From the beauty of the world's largest maze to the destruction of major earthquakes, life seems unpredictable. Whether it's one lone outfielder in Yankee Stadium or the lone penguin on a glacier in Antarctica, the sentiment is very much the same. Against the immensity of life on earth, each of us can sometimes feel so very small. --J.P. Cohen

4.0 out of 5 stars good subject, great presentation, fair execution, November 18, 2001
By shuttle358 (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
When I first saw this book, I figured it was exactly what I was looking for - striking perspectives and colors of the earth like the Orbit book, but from a lower altitude. The amazing images on the front and back cover make you belive this. Although there are a good bunch of these types of pictures, most photos are neither close and abstract enough to feel artsy, nor wide and far enough back to encompase an entire scene. It felt as though it wanted to be one way or the other - as though many shots were cropped arbitrarily from some greater image. The wide format of the book has potential for dramatic compositions, but few of the images seem to take strong advantage of this.

However, the printing and binding of the book is so excellent, its worth the price of admission alone. The prints themselves could use a bit more saturation, but the 365 glossy photos, heavy duty spine, and massive color and subject variety make this a good find none the less.

5.0 out of 5 stars World's beauty vs. some of the factual realities, January 15, 2002
By Michael A Weinberger (Woodstock, Vermont USA) - See all my reviews
This unusual book lets you select your worldview by looking either to the left or to the right. The images on the left-hand pages are shockingly beautiful views of the surface of the earth from about 100 feet above. Images are often more abstract and graphic than one would expect. The right side pages are only text, often telling the stories of poverty, overpopulation and environmental contamination. Both are legitimate views of the same place. For me, and I expect for many readers, the message is clear: address the issues presented in the text or loose the beautiful world of the photographs.

The photographic and printing quality are unusual good for a book of this limited price. The format is fairly small, but large enough to enjoy. Unfortunately the binding is on the short edge of this 2 plus inch thick book, making handling difficult and possibly leading to early binding failure.

I have given this book as a gift a number of times and it has been well received.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brethtaking photography!, October 26, 2002
By Jacqueline R Lee (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I originally saw Yann Arthus-Bertrand's work in the May 2002 issue of "Reporters without Borders". It contained 79 of his photos (approx 8 1/2 X 11 with great print quality and paper I might add - what a deal for ...). I then immediately looked to see if he had released any of his work in a book.

This book is absolutley breathtaking! I haven't even gotten half way through this book yet, but feel that I have a new appreciation for the earth. He accompanies each photo with a description. Unfortunately Mr. Jensen doesn't read too well, otherwise he would have noticed that the author makes statements about the harmful things that ALL COUNTRIES are doing to the planet, nor did he realize the fact that most of the photos are outside of the U.S.! This is a shame!

Everyone should have a copy of this book, if not for the stunning photography, for the lessons we can all learn by seeing the terrible destruction we are doing to our planet! This book is a must! I have given this book as a gift several times and everyone has loved it!
