Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Lauder has twin careers in beauty: as an executive at the Estée Lauder Companies she hawks cosmetics, but as a well-regarded photographer, she concentrates on the beauty of her physical surroundings. This volume, a follow-up to her successful The Seasons Observed, includes lively images of a Chilean sand dune, a field of French poppies and a sunset in Myanmar. While it's true that many of these pictures don't reflect the sophistication-either technological or visual-of a gifted photographer, they often display the grace and vision of an artistic spirit. Captured by Lauder, a pond in New York contains the changing depth of an expressionist painting, and the translucent leaves of a palm tree shimmer with light. At worst, the work is pretty but boring-like a slide show of someone else's vacation-but at its best, it is somehow calming and exhilarating at the same time. Royalties from sales will be donated to the Break Cancer Research Foundation; 50 full color photographs.

Product Description
In this striking sequel to the highly successful The Seasons Observed, Evelyn Lauder continues her photographic explorations of the nuances of the natural world. Abstractly sensuous, Lauder's serene "nature-scapes" reveal the camouflage patterns of plane tree barks, rhythmic undulations of snowdrifts, geometric patterns formed by sunlight, and other ecological wonders. Her search for such exquisite organic symmetries has taken her everywhere from the mountains of Colorado to the wilds of Patagonia and the remote regions of Myanmar (Burma).

The implicit themes of Lauder's photographs-optimism and nature's capacity for healing and renewal-are also those of her intense dedication to breast cancer research, and all royalties from An Eye for Beauty will be donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ho Hum snapshots from a rich lady, December 31, 2002
By RARusso (Gahanna, OH United States) - See all my reviews
If you're looking for a book of 'snapshots' from someone whose main interest is letting you know that she's traveled around the world, this book's for you! Chile, Viet Man, Havanna are all the places to be seen but Lauder failed to capture anything interesting about the people or locales. These are the type of photos that your friend wants you to suffer through when they've returned from a 14 day whirlwind tour through Europe. It's amazing what someone with a 35 mm camera and a lot of money can produce. PASS!!
