About the Author

Franciszka Themerson (1907–1988) was an influential artist, filmmaker, illustrator, theater designer, and book designer. She and her husband, Stefan Themerson, collaborated on many books for children and founded the Gaberbocchus Press.

First of all, the opening poem, "Who killed Cock Robin?" may not be the best poem to include as the first one in the book, considering there are several other poems they could have picked for little ones that are not so focused on dark words such as "blood...kill...die...grave." For a nursery book, this poem is a bit incongruous, particularly as an opener. However, whatever quality is lacking in poem choice may be redeemed by the illustrations, which are very authentic, remarkable, and have a vintage-feel that goes together within the period during which these poems were originally written. Another saving grace for this book is the inclusion of three other classic, more age-appropriate poems: "The Three Little Pigs", "The Gingerbread Man," and "The Three Bears," which any child or parent would want to read over and over again and never grow tired of. //My First Nursery Book// has the potential to be a charming book for children of all ages, and they will take pleasure in owning and reading it, sans the first poem (which may be more appropriate for slightly older children).
