3.0 out of 5 stars Informative, enjoyable explanation of QDM by the experts., November 30, 1998
Having never read the real details of Quality Deer Management (QDM) before, I was looking for something which was both informative in its detail and enjoyable to read for the average whitetail deer hunter. This book met both expectations in every sense. The editor combines the research and experience of field biologists and game experts to explain the what, why and how of QDM. While I suspected that QDM was important for the health of the whitetail deer herd in America, it also convinced me of the importance of QDM to the future of game hunting in the U.S. As an avid American hunter (currently living in Europe), I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in deer hunting because it makes the critical connection between the hunter and game conservationist. The Europeans have almost destroyed their big game herds and we have the opportunity in America to manage the human-wild game interface much better. In Europe, the hunting communities have come to the same conclusions as the editors of this book; that is, that QDM is not just a nice option for hunters and game managers, but a requirement for healthy herds and good hunting for the future. Finally, Mr Miller and Marchinton dispell the many myths about Quality Deer Management which seem to be often spread through the popular hunting magazines. Read now!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Whitetails, The how and why of, February 18, 2000
By "tfarrell03" (sharon, ct USA) - See all my reviews
This book is fantastic! It gives you an expert detailed overview of the whole process of Whitetail deer management. Anyone looking to improve the quality of deer hunting on their land or public land can use this information. There is an organization called the QDMA,(Quality Deer Management Association) which I recently joined and this book is on their preferred reading list. This book teaches you the ins and outs of QDM, in simplistic terms. I recommend it highly! Other books of interest to you would be producing and harvesting trophy whitetail deer by JAMES KROLL, ANOTHER MASTER IN THE ART OF IMPROVING WHITETAIL DEER HERDS! A Must Read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the experienced and inexperienced, August 16, 2000
By Jonathan Nelson (Illinois) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I've hunted whitetail since I was 14 (only 10 seasons), and recently I learned of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA). Wanting to learn more about Quality Deer Management (QDM), I found this book.

Reading this book was the best possible thing I could have done for myself and the sport of deer hunting. It teaches you the basics of QDM and explains why you should do it. This book addresses old myths like why it is bad to shoot anterless deer. It explains that QDM is about deer heard health, not just antler size. It expains how to set up a program on your property, explaining how to do deer density counts, why deer weight is important to get, how to age a deer, types of food plots, etc..

I feel this is an important book for whitetail hunters to read. I hunt on public land, and before reading this book, I would have shot the first buck I saw. Now, I've learned that where I hunt, it is more important to let the buck walk on by.
