Product Description

165 b/w photos, 25 drawings, 6 x 9 .Based on a proven program for teaching fly fishing to children and youth Detailed, illustrated guide to the acclaimed Fly Fisher Apprentice Program Covers tackle, fly tying, casting, knots, wading Any adult who has ever tried to teach a child to fly-fish will be eager for this book. Phil Genova, nationally known for his work as founder and director of the Fly Fisher Apprentice Program, shares proven techniques he has developed through the years to motivate and teach kids to fly-fish. His approach is that kids should have fun as they learn. His program likewise instills the concepts of environmental awareness and stewardship of the land that are integral to the sport. First Cast also offers guidelines for starting an apprenticeship program, with examples of day-long events and workshops. Skills and techniques are generously illustrated with 165 photos throughout the book. Phil Genova teaches fly fishing at Cornell University, serves as National Youth Fly Fishing Education Chairman for the Federation of Fly Fishers, and writes extensively on fly fishing topics. He lives in Ithaca, New York. With my fly-fishing experiences, I get to witness and participate in many cycles. I learn the art that I will someday pass on, I realize the cycle of nature and role I play in it, and I have a better understanding of the cycle of nature in general and how everything grows to a peak and then passes its experiences on. There is no better way to observe nature than to enter a stream, catch a fish, release it, and become part of the cycle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great starting place for teaching kids to fly fish, February 20, 2000
By Allen R. Crise "ol Al" (Texas Fly Fisherman) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Here is a book that is put together to help anybody get started teaching (learning as you go)the great sport of fly fishing. Mr Genova has compiled a format to include saltwater and fresh water fly fishing. Not only has he set up a format that will work he has included what is needed in supplies and equipment and where to obtain help. He included 'side bars' these side bars are comments and tips from many well known persons in the fly fishing world a long with some from his students. This book will be a guide long after you have several classes behind you. It is a teacher/instructors guide and sets an order to follow when teaching. Not just kids but anybody that wants to learn. With chapters on fly tying, fly casting, and bug collecting, from the class room to the landing of the fish Mr, Genove has covered what you should know and how to help teach the fundlementals and the ethics of the sport. There is only black and white pictures and drawings, no color prints. The format some times leaves you jumping around. As with any sport there are many ways to do some things he only cover some of them. My copy will guide me for years to come. As a FFF Certified Fly Casting Instructor I will keep this book for MY referance book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spot On!, January 30, 2006
By H. Schmalz (Albquerque, NM) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Have just started reading this book. It is wholistic, generous, patient, and full of hope. Advice is extremely practical. I have 4 year old and while he is still a bit young, he is for example, already extremely interested in flies and fly-tying, which resonantes with the author's advice to start with this aspect of the sport. This is a carefully and well thought-out book, particularly if you have a heart for kids. Highly recommended.
