Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Campy, sexy and legendary in their own right, the James Bond movie posters in this whopper of a compilation feature every movie from 1962's Dr. No to 1999's The World Is Not Enough. All the usual suspects are here: the logo, the girls, the tag lines and the various incarnations of 007, including David Niven and George Lazenby. The author throws in a few surprises, too, including foreign, regional, unused, festival and special posters, assorted cross-promotional pieces and other displays. There's even a poster altered by theater owners who were afraid of offending patrons, evidencing that Bond art, like Bond movies, "always pushed the boundaries." In addition to the full-color (often full-page) reproductions, Nourmand, a dealer in international film posters and consultant for Christie's, offers commentary on each movie and its artwork, and concludes with profiles of the artists who created these memorable images. A fun and fresh retrospective of a pop culture phenomenon and lucrative franchise, this book will undoubtedly thrill Bond aficionados, movie buffs and film poster collectors.

From Library Journal
On October 5, 1962, a god was born, for that day marked the release of Dr. No starring Sean Connery as super-cool British secret agent James Bond. To commemorate the film's 40th anniversary, Nourmand, co-proprietor of London's Reel Poster Gallery and a film poster consultant for Christie's, has collected the Bond series movie posters (more than 200), including lobby one-sheets, teaser posters for forthcoming releases, and some foreign versions dating from Dr. No to 1999's The World Is Not Enough. Each poster includes a caption detailing its background, a film plot synopsis, and special production notes (if any). There are also additional goodies such as festival posters, a spread of special artwork appearing in Esquire in the 1960s, and profiles of each artist. The style of these posters has changed over time, with the golden Connery and anemic Roger Moore years mostly utilizing paintings, while the short-lived Timothy Dalton era and current Pierce Brosnan ads are photo montages, although almost all feature Bond brandishing a pistol with some shapely babe in the background. Bond fans will love this book. Recommended. Michael Rogers, "Library Journal"

5.0 out of 5 stars Picture of the past, December 2, 2002
It's sad to see how [poorly] the poster art for the Bond films have become in the past decade. But this collection allows you to relish the amazing images and see Bond around the world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of James Bond posters!, December 2, 2002
By Devin Zydel (New York) - See all my reviews
We are finally given a book that focuses on the art of the James Bond films. With it's extensive size and length, this is one 007 book that is sure to deliver the idea it promises. Every film from Dr. No to The World is Not Enough including Casino Royale and Never Say Never Agin are included. Each film has posters from the USA, UK and many other countries that made posters for each film. The teaser posters fro On Her Majesty's Secret Service are a real treat offering the odd, but truly inspirational 007 and Bride posters. Excitng montage art for many other film posters is included as well. Many films have unique posters for each main character in the film such as The World is Not Enough. A wonderful and new kind of 007 book thats real strength lies in the pictures and not in the text. Great for all that enjoy James Bond!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, but still a GREAT collection of Bond posters!, March 20, 2002
By John Cox (Hollywood, CA) - See all my reviews
At last a collection of James Bond posters! While I wouldn't say this book is complete in a check-list sort of way, I do think it's pretty darn impressive. This book owes much to a German publication released in 1997 called LICENSE TO THRILL. In fact, it uses many of the same images and utilized the same basic format. But at least with this book I can read the text (or what there is of it).

The best thing about the book is the concept art for OHMSS, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, and LIVE & LET DIE. The OHMSS concept art is worth the price of the book alone. It shows you not just variant posters, but a whole different approach to marketing the movie. The "007 and Bride" posters are wild and I think this would have made a great campaign. It certainly would have been the most daring and different campaign ever done for a Bond film and I think perfect for this very special movie. For those of you who love montage art, you've got to see the Thai OCTOPUSSY and NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN posters (too bad it doesn't have the Thai A VIEW TO A KILL which is in the German book).

The only disappointment (and this was true of the German book as well) is how little space is devoted to the later films, especially the Dalton films. Paramount is the fact that, even though they make reference to it in the text section for LICENCE TO KILL, there are no examples of the unused and vastly superior LICENCE REVOKED campaign by Robert Peak. This is a glaring omission! Also, where's the standard U.S. one-sheets for NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN and FOR YOUR EYES ONLY? Strange.

But aside from these points, I would say this book is a must for Bond fans, especially if you don't have the German book.
