Product Description

What if doorbells used smell instead of sound? What if watches told time more slowly on weekends? Designers at the ground-breaking firm IDEO the most innovative design company in the world push themselves to ask seemingly outrageous questions like these daily as they work to construct the products that shape our lives. Following 12 design experiments conceived by designers at IDEO, I Miss My Pencil takes a voyeuristic look at what designers do daily, might get to do once, and sometimes only hope to do. Each experiment is made real through collaboration, sketching, prototyping, fabrication, and photographing to go beyond the conceptual to the curiously concrete.

This book takes the reader to the world of the designers creative process in a "easyunderstanding" way. And the most important: shows that mistakes happens in the process and are important because they give tips for others possibilities. Important for designers as well as for any profissinal involved in a product/solution development.

4.0 out of 5 stars industrial design at its best, September 15, 2009

I am currently a senior in college studying industrial design and naturally, wanting to eventually work for IDEO (pipe dream, I know), I had this baby on pre-order for awhile. This book is great for anyone interested in industrial design and the design process. It is amazing how these people think and design for a living, I wish I had their drive and creativity for their "inventions". One amazing thing that industrial designers do (especially at high level firms like IDEO), they tell stories with their products. This book is no exception, every process they go through, it always comes back to a story. The book isn't very long, as the conversations between the two designers are fairly brief and documented in an almost IM like fashion, but it gets to the point and doesn't waste your time. It's a design book after all and shouldn't be too hard of a read. Overall, this book is great, it really tests your level of thought and really inspires me to put more emotion/storytelling in to the things I design.

I can't give it a 5 because of the cloth cover - it attracts too many little fuzz balls when sitting out (it's an industrial design book, I have to be critical on stuff like that). The cover is the only thing really holding it back and is about a revision or two away from being a real "sweetheart". And I just wish it was a bit longer.
