Product Description

In The Soul of Popular Culture, leading writers and critics, many of them influenced by the thought of C. G. Jung, draw upon the insights of depth psychology to delve into the meanings of TV programs like Star Trek and Fawlty Towers, movies such as The Piano and The Silence of the Lambs, and other contemporary media, as well as the public preoccupation with such issues as abortion, AIDS, the O.J. Simpson trial, and our enduring fascination with Elvis.

4.0 out of 5 stars Understanding the deeper meaning of culture, November 4, 2006
By William V. Wishard (Washington, D.C.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
"The Soul of Popular Culture" is a significant contribution not only to understanding contemporary culture, but also to comprehending what is going on beneath the surface in the collective life and psyche of America. The contributors to this volume have extensive experience in depth psychology, which gives their analyses a dimension one will never find in the typical movie review or newspaper commentary on some pop singer. For those wanting to understand the deeper currents of our time, this is a valuable contribution.

2.0 out of 5 stars read the excerpt here, March 7, 2006
Go ahead read the excerpt included here at Amazon. This looks like an example of what passes for scholarship these days: erudite academics discussing popular culture. I might have found this more entertaining, had I not been forced to look up so many complicated words used in the excerpt - words for which there are simpler, and equally effective equivalents in more common use. Fortunately I have a great on-line dictionary that served me well.
When I was younger I may have found writing like this entertaining, but now I find it less so. So go read the excerpt here
