Product Description

Covering over 300 years, this volume of essays articulates the literary, ideological and historical contexts in which fairy tales evolved in Italy and France. The tales analyzed were each appropriated from oral tradition by professional men and women of letters and thus reveal a cultural history.

5.0 out of 5 stars An interesting collection of essays, April 17, 2000
By Heidi Anne Heiner (SurLaLune Fairy Tales.com) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Nancy Canepa organized a conference about fairy tales and then edited this collection of essays that were presented. Included is an essay by the prolific Jack Zipes about tales similar to Puss In Boots. All of the essays discuss the often overlooked "Il Penatmerone" by Giambattista Basile, an important volume and influence on our modern day fairy tales. This collection provides a wide range of scholarship in an area of fairy tale study that is frequently overlooked. These essays serve as an excellent starting point for studying Basile's great work.
