A Native American writer best known for his novel The Surrounded (Univ. of New Mexico Pr., 1978), McNickle wrote short stories throughout his life. Hans (American Indian studies, Univ. of North Dakota) presents them here, many for the first time. As Hans reports in her well-written, informative introduction, McNickle was slow to acquire an appreciation of himself as an American Indian, and this collection gives evidence of his evolving consciousness. Some of the stories are just fragments that would best have been left out, but most are fully realized presentations of life in flux. Whether set on the reservation or in the big city, they deal primarily with the themes of alienation from community and environment. Recommended for larger collections of American literature.
