4.0 out of 5 stars The first biography of St. Francis, August 7, 2000
By Michael Antares (San Rafael, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This book contains the two lives of Saint Francis as written by Thomas of Celano. The two lives were written within twenty years following the death of Saint Francis and so represent a first-hand account of the his life written by one of his early followers. The translation of the original latin was done by a Franciscan, Placid Hermann. This is necessary reading if you are seriously studying his life.

5.0 out of 5 stars The life of a Saint at the end of the Middle Ages in Italy, March 16, 2009
By BYF "Backyard Flix" (San Francisco, CA) - See all my reviews
From back cover:

"Francis Bernardone was born into a changing age. A year after his birth (1182), feudalism in Italy gave one of its first death gasps. Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire Frederick Barbarossa was forced to conclude a treaty at Constance with the Italian commercial towns of Northern Italy in the region called Lombardy. The cities had struggled and had won self-government under the crown, the right to administer their own justice without appeal to the emperor, to levy their own taxes. The treaty marked an epoch in the history of Europe. Political authority for the first time passed from the feudal class to the common people.

Pietro Bernardone of Assisi was a 'common man' who had made good at cloth merchandising. Assisi was struggling to oust its feudal master, and to rival pompous Perugia, a neighboring hill city.

On the brow of the hill as the 13th century dawned stood a new sower of good seed--St. Francis of Assisi. The seed that he sowed was the Gospel of Christ. So mighty was it, so novel its freshness, so powerful its pull, that it drew thousands and thousands up from the muddy madness of money and lifted their faces to heavenly splendor and riches which moths cannot damage, nor rust consume, nor thieves break in to steal.

Francis came preaching the balm-bearing words PAX ET BONUM--Peace and Wellbeing! And the world never forgot his gentle gesture."
