Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-5-This simple yet complete and interesting biography of the first man on the Moon includes the highlights of his life. Five sidebars-one per chapter-give further explanations of various references such as the Depression and the space race. Photos appear on nearly every page; most are in color. Relevant, whimsical drawings introduce each chapter. Don Brown's One Giant Leap: The Story of Neil Armstrong (Houghton, 1998) has no photos and looks more like a picture book. A solid addition to biography collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dreams Do Come True, August 15, 2003
By Beverly Sharon Bryant (Nashville, TN United States) - See all my reviews
I found this book to be fascinating and especially enjoyed all the pictures. Although short, only 48 pages, it was filled with many interesting facts about Neil Armstrong's life from his childhood to when he became a grandfather. This book will surely hold the interest of boys and girls and show them that through hard work dreams can become a reality.

The book starts when Neil is 6. He mows grass and gives most of the money to his family as this is the time of the Great Depression. One day his father takes him for a plane ride and this is when Neil decides he wants to become a pilot. As Neil gets older he enjoys reading, building model airplanes and music (he plays the horn in a band called The Mississippi Moonshiners). To pay for flying lessons he works various odd jobs and gets his pilot's license at the age of 16, even before getting his driver's license. Later, he temporarily leaves college to serve in the Korean War where he receives 3 medals. Then over the years Neil learns more and more about becoming an astronaut. On July 20, 1969 Neil becomes the first man to walk on the moon! And you can make your dreams come true, too!
