Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up-- A good reference source about the state flags, giving descriptions and illustrations for all 50 flags. Arranged alphabetically, each state is given a facing page spread. Illustrations are in color, and the one to one-and-a-half page text for each flag provides a little of the state's history as well as the history, background, and evolution of the current flag. Haban often describes how many states have changed their flags, but only the current flag is pictured. One flaw is the lack of an in-depth discussion or illustration of the U. S. flag, of interest because many of the states incorporated parts of the national flag into their own designs. In spite of this, the text is clear and easy to understand, and the illustrations are very well done. Terms describing the parts of a flag are in bold type and defined in the glossary. The book is more comprehensive about the state flags than Inglefield's general Flags (Arco, 1979), and is a nice companion to Williams' What You Should Know About the American Flag (Maryland Historical Press, 1987). Overall, a bright, colorful book, with information that is current, objective, and easy to use. --Mary Mueller, Rolla Junior High School, MO

4.0 out of 5 stars How Proudly They Wave, January 22, 2004
By hannah (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
this book was on a very intresting subject and i learned alot from but i have to say it is a little dull reading state after state consecutively(sp?). well any way it ws cool to find out how my state flag looked and how it got to be. it was also intresting because i rarely see state flags. it was also cool to pick out my favorite flag in the book. it was a great history book and a nice helpful tool for students studing state history. well overall it was a really good history book.
