From School Library Journal
Adult/High School-Flipping through this title reveals a vast array of beautiful art, most of it in full color, executed in a wide variety of styles and media, all of it reflecting fantastic subjects. The book can certainly be enjoyed on that level. It collects the work of 10 different artists in the fantasy and science-fiction fields, mixing recognizable illustrations from products as well known as the Everquest computer game with works executed for the creators' personal amusement. Some of the artists, such as Keith Parkinson, work primarily in oils, while others choose pastel, watercolor, or digitally altered photography. It is unlikely that any one individual will find all of the art appealing; conversely, there is something here for almost everyone. Especially valuable is the text that accompanies the breathtaking graphics. Each artist discusses the method used to execute the images, and some of them offer insights into what made a painting successful, or unsuccessful for that matter. They also describe how they get assignments that pay, and how they got to that point in their career. Most of these journeys began in their young adult years, working with whatever materials were available to them. This book should inspire young artists.
