Gr. 4^-7. Asthma, increasingly familiar to young readers, is explained in ways that will benefit both those who have it and those who don't. A general introduction on breathing and allergies discusses the basic airway structure and how it works. This is followed by information about asthma's causes, with a particularly good discussion of emotional triggers. The book's second half covers coping, from choosing doctors to understanding medications. Although aimed at asthma sufferers, the section will be helpful to students who see their classmates using inhalers and worry about "what to do if . . ." Family responses to an asthmatic child are given ample coverage, and Simpson has included information on exercise-induced asthma. A useful combination of management skills and background.
