From Library Journal
This book follows the format of the first volume (Africa, LJ 9/1/97) in a projected ten-volume set, presenting essays two to 20 pages long by several dozen scholars. Part 1 introduces the region and discusses scholarly methodology. Part 2 features essays on broad subjects: musical instruments, popular music, and art music. Part 3 focuses on nations and indigenous or immigrant cultural groups. Each essay includes a list of references, and the book is generously illustrated. Though this is Volume 2, it is the fourth to be published, and libraries expecting the whole set should by now have volumes 1, 4, and 9. Notes[An] excellent and invaluable volume....The few inaccuracies inevitably found in very broad introductory sections in no way detract from the ambitious, historic and invaluable achievements of this volume....Sophisticated, perceptive perspectives, combined with multi-level approaches to the material combine in this remarkable work, a requirement for all serious scholars and every library. Garland's editors and contributors are to be warmly congratulated.
