"...contains a lot of very unique features throughout. Techniques and concepts are typically illustrated through a series of examples." -- Zentralblatt fur Mathematik, 2000

"…a handy reference as well as a good textbook." -- International Statistical Institute, Short Book Reviews

"…a marvelous book for students." -- Statistical Papers

...the book contains unique features throughout. Examples are the moment problem, which is clarified through a nice example, the role of the probability generating functions, and the central limit theorem for the sample variance. Techniques and concepts are typically illustrated through a series of examples. Within a box is routinely summarized what it is that has been accomplished or where to go from that point. At the end of each chapter a long list of exercises is arranged according the sections.

Product Description
This gracefully organized text presents the rigorous theory of probability and statistical inference in the style of a tutorial, using worked examples, exercises, numerous figures and tables, and computer simulations to develop and illustrate concepts. Beginning with the basic ideas and techniques of probability theory and progressing to more rigorous topics, this treatment covers all of the topics typically addressed in a two-semester course in probability and statistical inference for graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses, including hypothesis testing, Bayesian analysis, and sample-size determination. The author reinforces important ideas and special techniques with drills and boxed summaries.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solutions?, September 19, 2003
By A Customer
This is actually a very nice text, and is easy reading, if you have atleast completed calc III.

The major draw back to this book is that it doesn't provide any solutions to end-of-chapter problems. As a result, you have no way of knowing if you have done the problem correctly. As a result, one needs to search through other texts to find similar problems to check there work. Based on this flaw, I would not recommend using this book as a reference, or as a required text for a graduate level Math Stat class.

5.0 out of 5 stars Author's Review, April 19, 2000
Probability and Statistical Inference by Nitis Mukhopadhyay, Professor of Statistics, University of Connecticut, Storrs

Publisher and Date: Marcel Dekker, Inc., New York; March 2000

ISBN #: 0-8247-0379-0

Length of the book and price: Almost 700 pages long. A single textbook price

$95

It is an attractive feature. This textbook is significantly cheaper than any other comparable book at this level. The hard-copy book is available right now.

Audience: Designed for two-semester or three-quarter courses allowing flexibility in the selection of topics beyond the core material! It is essentially a textbook for first-year graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in probability and statistical inference. It can be used as a supplemental text for classes in Advanced Inference or Decision Theory. Students should have completed a calculus prerequisite.

Special Features: One will find novelty of treatment practically in every section and every topic. This gracefully organized textbook reveals the rigorous theory of probability and statistical inference in the style of a tutorial, using worked examples, exercises, numerous figures and tables, and computer simulations to develop and illustrate concepts. It employs over 1400 equations to reinforce its subject matter. The pre-publication reviewers called it a "ground breaking" text for first-year graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in this subject.

Worked examples: In many places, I let the Examples (worked out in detail) do the "talking," that is explaining concepts or techniques. The number of worked examples in this book is few folds more than those in several comparable books combined! Check it out.

Browse the Web: To look at some of the special features and novelties, go to

www.dekker.com

and then click on "New Books", followed by a click on "Math and Stat," and then scroll down to my book.

To order: In USA/Canada/South America, please call 1-800-228-1160 or FAX to 914-796-1772, or send E-mail to bookorders@dekker.com for more information. In Europe/Africa/ Middle East/ Far East/ Australia/ India/China, send E-mail to intlorders@dekker.com for more information.

All comments would help me in improving whatever needs improvement. I am eager to know what are some of the things a reader likes or does not like in this textbook.
