3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, February 1, 2001
By A Customer
This book is NOT a book about developing digital effects for guitar, as one previous reviewer would have you believe.

The book concerns itself with the construction of a MIDI computer based upon a particular microprocessor chip. There are what appear to be several excellent introductory chapters on construction techniques, necessary tools, electronic components, etc. Several chapters lead you through the development of the MIDI controller. The remainder of the book describe various software projects to expand the functionality of the system.

In truth, it appears to be a well-written book, but I returned it because I was hoping to learn how to build digital signal processing effects, not MIDI controllers. If you are looking for a digital age update of the Anderton's out-of-print "Electronic Projects for Musicians", like I was, then keep looking....

5.0 out of 5 stars This book rocks!, January 16, 2004
By Sandy (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
Another reviewer was complaining that you can't get the designs for this book, therefore it is useless, but if you do a Google search you'll find that one of the authors (Bob Moses) has a personal website with all of the schematics, source code, metal drawings - everything - for the projects in this book. I've built several of them, and they are totally awesome and work like a charm. Also, I think you can still buy kits on line at http://electrovoce.com/.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Book if you expect to build anything., February 4, 2003
By A Customer
This Book is virtually Worthless. All projects in this book lack critical information to actually build the projects such as PCB Layout, Part Lists and Source Code for the ROM's or the software/hardware to program them.

While the book provides the name of a company nameed "PAVO" where you can supposably buy a kit. This company was/is at least partially owned by one of the authors (Bob Moses). It appears this company is out of business. The phone number is not in service and a google search reveals that his Website(Which has not been updated since 2/2000) that his email address is thru the company's Website (which is also not in service).

I'm an Electrical Engineer and although I beleive I could re-create the missing info it would be almost be easier to start from scratch.

I am extremely disappointed with this. I first got in got interested in electronics from Craig Anderton's book Electronic Projects For Musicians (which was out of print but you can still find some copys)that was a great book. I would highly recommend Craig's books but I would I no longer do so sight unseen.

1.0 out of 5 stars you won't be able to build the projects from the book info
the authors do a great job of making these projects seem buildable but then leave out information critical to actually building the projects. Read more
