4.0 out of 5 stars A touching rememberance, April 6, 2001
In this book, Mr. Lax writes about his life before, during, after his Holocaust experiences. He tells us this story as he is traveling to these sites again many years later. He was born into a very religious family in Romania, in the town of Caraseu. The first part of the book talks about life in Caraseu before he was taken away. It explains the culture and life he grew up in, and the events leading up to his eventual imprisonment. That part was very interesting because I didn't know too much about the culture. In the middle of the book, he writes about his experiences in the labor camps and how he narrowly escaped death many times. It shocked me how they were treated. I also found out that most of the prisoners in the camps were prisoners of war and not Jewish people. The last part of the book was what he did after the war, and how he came to the Us. He also talks about how he felt after he came to the US. He also talks about his family some. For a real human side to the Holocaust, Caraseu is a good book. It doesn't just talk about what happened in the camps; it has a human perspecive from someone who has experienced this. We can learn what really happened there, something which no historian can imagine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Memories of a tragic time, July 4, 2005
By Cecelia E Connally (Cleveland, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One day your life is normal. Everything is moving along and then the Nazis walk into your village and life is never the same again.

That is the basis of the story that Martin Lax tells of his life in Caraseu and how the war changed every fiber of his being. He tells his amazing story of survival and success in a very readable and well writen memoir.

There are many stories of people who survived the Houlocaust, but Marty's is extra special.
