Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

A big, beautiful car book with a different slant. Eminent British automotive writer Georgano partners with an outstanding car photographer from his own country, Nicky Wright, to produce a testament to the dictum "the automobile is art." Their focus is on individual car stylists who adhered to the philosophy that the automobile "has to sell on its appearance as much as on its mechanical qualities." The men profiled here were not (and are not) specialty designers of custom cars but employees of big car companies who devoted themselves to beautifying cars sold to a mass market. The breathtaking illustrations augment a loving text as we learn about such outstanding stylists as Harley Earl and the La Salle (launched in 1927), Bill Mitchell and his 1938 Cadillac Sixty Special and his 1963 Corvette Sting Ray, Gordon Buehrig's Cord 810 (introduced in 1936), and Bill Porter's 1995 Buick Riviera. Review

Nicky Wright’s excellent photos embellish the lavish pages of Georgano’s display, which traces the works of the great American auto stylists and reveals the history of their evolution. Enjoy beautiful color photos and insights on how the developers arrived at their particular, unique auto designs. -- Midwest Book Review

By A Customer
I am in my mid seventies and a flustrated automobile designer all my life. I have a large auto libaray, cars of all periods and this is by far the greatest book because it tell about the people who designed them through the ages. First class job. Thank you. Ephraim P.
