4.0 out of 5 stars American History they don't teach you in school, March 22, 2006
The bland title, Some American Ladies, hides a wealth of fascinating personal details and humanizing facts about the lives of our early presidents in the White House and beyond. I liked it because of the information I found about Washington DC in the early 19th century and was amused at how Georgetown's night life and tavern intrigue back then was not so different from the contemporary scene now with (Jenna Bush)a current White House resident. I also liked it because I found mention of an ancestor of mine (Mary Hellens)who was married in the White House to the son of John Quincy Adams, who was also her cousin. I knew some family lore about this event but was always a bit doubtful until I read a reference to it in the book.
The prose style here is quite simple and the stories are told as might be expected in an informal conversation. Scholars would probably do it very differently, but the information lets you feel the human sidw of these historical figures.
