From the Inside Flap
Preface There is now a significant body of knowledge about the risk factors, pathogenesis and treatment, and prevention of periodontal diseases. Yet this knowledge is rarely applied as an evidence-based approach to the difficult problem of deciding when specific treatments or examination methods work. Thus, both classic and current references are included in each chapter. This basic text has been written in an attempt to make our understanding of periodontal diseases accessible to the dental hygiene student and to the practicing dental hygienist and dentist needing to update basic knowledge or acquire a concise synopsis of clinical periodontics. This text is presented in three sections: Section I deals with the anatomy of the periodontium, progression of periodontal diseases, risk factors (e.g., dental biofilms, smoking, and diabetes mellitus) for periodontal diseases, and periodontal disease as a risk factor for systemic conditions such as stroke, cardiovascular disease, emphysema, and premature low-birth-weight babies. Section II deals with the clinical examination and treatment planning for the management of patients with periodontal diseases. Section III comprises the remaining chapters, which discuss the nonsurgical and surgical therapy. Included in this section is an extensive review of drugs used in periodontal therapy including various controlled-release drug devices (e.g., PerioChip™, Atridox®, Actiste®) and enzyme suppression drugs (e.g., Periostat™) used as adjunctive treatment. The appendices include the steps needed for the prevention of infective endocarditis, periodontic informatics, how to critically review the periodontal literature, and periodontal issues pertaining to women. Extensive tables feature clinical applications of periodontal therapy. At the 1999 International Workshop for a Classification of Periodontal Diseases and Conditions in Illinois, a new classification system was developed. This reviewed in Appendix 5. It is the intentions of The Academy of Periodontology to integrate this new system into education as early as possible. Since this classification was published during the final stages of publication of this textbook, we tempted to incorporate the new terminology, at times referring to the older, outdate terms. However, the reader should refer to Chapter 4 for a more in-depth description of the new terminology. We hope this book will serve as a helpful text for all dental practitioners.
