Product Description

SPOCK A TRAITOR?

There is sabotage aboard the Enterprise, and Spock's investigation leads him into defiance of the Federation and a bizarre alliance with the Romulan and Klingon Empires against the bloodthirsty Tomarii -- a savage race for whom war and battle are life itself.

Now Spock has been declared a traitor and condemned to the shame of the Federation's highest security prison. And now Captain James Kirk must face the toughest decision of his command, while a lifelong friendship and the destiny of the free universe hang in the balance! --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Wrong! That's the word, Spock. Wrong!", September 20, 2006
By Jeanne Tassotto (Trapped in the Midwest) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Very late in the novel Kirk makes the above observation which also sums up this story. The action opens with the Enterprise nearly being destroyed, severely injuring members of the bridge crew. Spock risks paralysis as a result of his injuries in an attempt to find the cause of the explosion. His efforts lead to a court martial and charges of treason as the situation further deteriorates.

All of that occurs in the first half of the book which brings up the first problem, the author threw in enough plot for about five books causing the action to leap from thing to another without ever fully exploring anything. Other issues include very poorly researched science concepts (the author has managed to ignore basic precepts in astronomy, biology, ecology and physics to name a few). Another huge problem is that despite naming the characters Kirk, Spock, McCoy et al and placing them on a space ship named Enterprise in a Federation these characters have nothing in common with the Star Trek universe that we have all come to know and love.

There are many other titles in the series of Star Trek tie-in novels and happily most of them are much better than this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Back fire, August 14, 2001
I am a fan of Star Trek, mainly DS9 and Next gen. But I do not mind pulling out an original Trek novel and giving it a read. However this one is lost in warp space. The author seems to be having difficulty with Trek in general. The Characters I will admit must not be easy to do or the universe itself. But some do it better than others and this one just doesn't come together. The plot seems jumpy and put together rather than a smooth progression. The characters just don't seem right. If you have to have every Trek book then get it. Otherwise you may want to give it a miss.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst Trek novels, December 18, 2000
By Quickhappy "quickhappy" (Big city, big country) - See all my reviews
In _Black Fire_ you get a hackneyed plot, which revolves around a piece of fabric. It's slow-going and the reader often wonders what is motivating the characters. It doesn't surprise me that this is the only Star Trek novel Sonni Cooper ever wrote. Considering the possibilities inherent in Star Trek and in science fiction, this book is a loser.
