From the Inside Flap

C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) was a respected scholar and teacher at Oxford University for 29 years and then a professor of Medieval and Renaissance literature at Cambridge University to the end of his career. An atheist throughout his early life, he adopted theism in 1929 and converted to Christianity in 1931.

Lewis’s spiritual pilgrimage followed two tracks, both intellectual and emotional-intuitive. Since childhood he had experienced prolonged moments of longing, the “bittersweet stab of desire.” He perceived that these longings, which he came to identify as joy, actually pointed away from themselves, to another world of permanence and fulfillment, to God.

A talented debater and writer, C. S. Lewis wrote prolifically in many genres: novels, poetry, children’s literature, fantasy, science fiction, literary criticism, and apologetics. In addition, he wrote essays, sermons, and hundreds of letters, rich for their insight and human concern.

Lewis’s many published works cover a wide spectrum of topics, both contemporary issues and the enduring questions of human meaning in the world as creatures of God. How do we live in the world with nuclear weapons? How should animals be treated in scientific research? How does a person deal with homosexual tendencies? How do Christians confront suffering and evil in the world? Does prayer really work? Lewis addresses these and hundreds of other topics from the bedrock of biblical truth. Indeed, C. S. Lewis is hailed as one of the greatest Christian thinkers of the twentieth century.

The Quotable Lewis presents hundreds of excerpts from Lewis’s writings, providing ready access to his thought on each topic. An exhaustive index references key words and concepts, allowing the reader to easily find quotes on any subject of interest. Also included are many photographs of Lewis and his circle.

For browsing, study, illustration, and personal enrichment, this encyclopedic selection of C. S. Lewis’s most salient quotes is ideal for communicators, students, long-time Lewis fans, and first-time readers of Lewis’s work.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Tool, April 28, 2000
By Bethany McKinney (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Not only is this book an excellent resource for Christian speakers/preachers/etc., but it can also be of usefulness an individual's personal life by offering words on joy, peace, death, etc. The quotes are topically organized, and the references back to the original works are very helpful when you can't quite remember exactly which book contains that C.S. Lewis quote that has been running through your mind lately. This book is also helpful if you engage in theological conversations and/or debates. The quotes included in the book are good encapsulations of the gyst of many of Lewis' insights into human nature, Divine nature, and Divine human nature. Some sections that I have found especially helpful in informal philosophical debates are "Free Will", "Sin", "Human Nature", and "Love." Any diehard Lewis fan (without a photographic memory), who loves being able to quote him in sermons, academic papers or in conversation, could greatly benefit from having this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine resource, September 23, 1998
This book is a fine resource for looking up Lewis quotes or for thumbing through to read Lewis in a different light. The quotes are grouped alphabetically by topic (e.g. "courage", "experience", "joy", "Macdonald", or "Middle Ages"), being culled from the academic and popular works alike. Lewis enthusiasts (or pastors or priests or rabbis looking for material for their sermons) would do well to invest a few dollars and purchase this book. It comes equipped with a preface & introduction, bibliography, a helpful index, and several pages of pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars AN ANTHOLOGY OF A TRULY REMARKABLE MIND, June 18, 2004
By D. McAllister "MRD" (Somewhere in the Field) - See all my reviews
THE QUOTABLE LEWIS provides a concise, well-ordered collection of quotes by C. S. Lewis. The mistake that most will make is to assume that this is a book that would be interesting or useful to students of religion only. Lewis' thoughts and writings, while predominantly centered in the world of religion, include a diversity of personal musings ranging from English literature to being well-read to world politics.

The book also provides an excellent reference to the numerous works of C. S. Lewis should you be interested in further study and reading.

Don't be tempted to sell this on short on the basis that Lewis had nothing to say to you. Take a look. I am sure that you will find something that fits.
