Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Published to accompany an unprecedented exhibition of works by 25 African American women artists, this catalogue is a poignant celebration of women's artistry. There are 70 illustrations, 60 of which are in full color, featuring paintings, sculptures, prints, fabric, and mixed media works by significant contemporary artists such as Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Faith Ringgold, and Howardena Pindell. Included are essays by scholars and curators discussing the impact of African American women on the arts, society, and culture of the United States. The insightful foreword is by poet Maya Angelou.

From Library Journal
Atlanta's Spelman College commemorates 115 years of educating black women and the opening of its Museum of Fine Arts with this catalog for a traveling exhibition of masterworks in every medium by living African American women. From Faith Ringgold and Betye and Alison Saar to Lorna Simpson and Carrie Mae Weems, the 25 artists are as notable as the catalog's nine contributors. Maya Angelou's foreword is followed by essays addressing the often-overlooked influence of African American women artists on the nation's aesthetics and cultural history by prominent curators and academics. Disappointingly, color reproductions are generally small and used sparingly, but overall, this slender volume packs a major wallop and is recommended for art and academic collections.?Russell T. 5.0 out of 5 stars priceless, April 4, 2000
By jc (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
I use this book all the time as an artist and a teacher. I wish there were a book for each one of the fantastic artists in the book, but so glad that here is a book about us (Black Women) by us (Black Women). The reproductions are many and excellent. A great introduction to Black Women doing art that get exposure on a more national scale
