About the Authors
After reading Mr. Motto and Mr. Junes book, I was amazed at how much knowledge they were able to convey concerning the many different facts of investigatory agencies involving crime solving.
I found the book fascinating, not only about undercover operations, but also very informative concerning other aspects of law enforcement investigations. It is a must read for anyone interested in the police field or law enforcement in general.
-David R. Hall, Chief of Police, Harrison, New York
Anyone who has heard Carmine Motto teach or has read his earlier writings, knows that he has few equals in the rule of common sense. This book offers critical information about all facets of undercover operation, mostly taken from Mottos life experience-a book that is very readable and a must for all police managers.
-John M. Dolce, Commissioner of Public Safety, White Plains, New York
Carmine J. Motto completed over sixty years in the field of law enforcement, much of his career devoted to being the U. S. Secret Services recognized expert in undercover operations. He also served in the New York State Police, the U. S. Treasury Office of Law Enforcement, as Deputy Commissioner of Public Safety, and as police commissioner in New York. He continues to instruct new agents, consult for television programs and movies, and write books on his undercover work and experiences involving counterfeiters and conspirators.
Carmine Mottos undercover 2nd Edition is both entertaining and instructional. The excerpts taken from his real life experiences educates the reader in the fine art of undercover work. The book clearly illustrates that the basics of undercover work as we know it today has not changed since the days when young treasury agent Motto took to the streets to fight crime.
-Peter A. Viviano, Chief of Detectives, White Plains, New York
Dale L. June split his Secret Service career between protective assignments with the President of the U.S. and other high ranking officials, and investigative work, including undercover assignments. He also worked as a police officer in Northern California, and an Intelligence Specialist (organized crime and terrorism) for the U. S. Customs Service, as a private investigator and executive protection/security specialist. He teaches criminal justice and writes books on protective assignments and undercover work.

The book could be a valuable training resource, both as a reference source and as a text for training and instruction in undercover operations. It clearly outlines the basic principal of undercover work, and should give anyone who reads it a clear and basic understanding of the field.
-Lieutenant M. J. Kamensky, Police Department, Harrison, New York
This is an excellent book…this is a strong recommend purchase for anyone training undercover agents and a strong buy just for the readability of the book…Well done Carmine Motto, Dale June and CRC.

Undercover was originally published by C.C. Thomas in 1971. It approaches the topic from three angles: How to handle informants, how to investigate suspects, and how to be an undercover agent. The book quickly became the classic text for a whole generation of law enforcement personnel, and the name of Carmine Motto, now retired from the secret service, is Motto's agent with the suggestion that we reprint. I countered that we might consider a completely revised edition if June, on of our authors and a fine writer, would agree to co-author. Motto and June have enthusiastically agreed to work together to modernize the writing, replace the photographs, and update the cases. Other revisions are listed below in the key features section.
