Editorial Reviews

Product Description

When speaking of the units of foreign volunteers integrated into the German forces during World War II, the Waffen-SS automatically comes to mind. But, in absolute numbers, more foreigners served with the Wehrmacht in the army, navy and air force. Anti-Communism was the most significant reason why so many volunteers were induced to wear the German uniform. This title examines the Wehrmacht’s foreign volunteers, taking a close look at their uniforms, organisation and distinctive insignia. Among those covered are the Legion Wallanie, LVF, Ostlegionen, Balkan volunteers, Hiwis, Kalmucks, Cossacks, Baltic, Russian and Ukranian volunteers.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent laymans guide to Hilter's foreign legions (005), May 23, 2006

(REAL NAME)
Even though this book is, by necessity, small, it does provide the reader with a great overview of this little known subject. For the layman and dedicated reader alike, it will provide a good working knowledge of the subject of the Wehrmacht's foreign volunteers, and open the way to a more detailed investigation of the subject, should the reader desire. With the usual good colour plates and informative accompanying text, Carlos Caballero Jurado and Kevin Lyles have produced a book that concentrates mainly on the Heer (army), but also covers the Luftwaffe (air force) and Kriegsmarine (navy) use of these foreign volunteers. The photos are often seen for the first time, and the illustrations and colour plates are first class.

A top read!

A superbly written guide for students and historians on a little covered subject. Highly reccomended for anyone that has an interest in the more obscure Wehrmacht subjects. RFM
