Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Now available in paperback, this book brilliantly portrays what it was like to be facing death day after day with neither a bed to sleep in or a hot meal to look forward to.

This is warfare in the raw - brutal yet humorous, immensely tragic but, sadly, all true. A diary which was brought to a wider audience when the hardback was published in 1999.

Having sold out in a few months it is now being published in paperback for the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top Airborne book, December 2, 2006
Most WWII buffs will be familiar with the Pegasus Bridge assault from the Ambrose book, if that is you, then please consider getting this fine book too. Denis Edwards was one of the Coup de Main party who landed by the bridge in Horsa gliders at 12.16am on the morning of D-Day. The fact he was actually there gives this book a great level of authenticity and his easy-going writing style makes it a pleasantly informative read. Of course the book covers far more than the events of D-Day, it continues through to the crossing of the Rhine, which for the Ox and Bucks was every bit as costly as the Normandy campaign.

A fine book, with insights that only the combat soldier can offer.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good View for Americans., February 17, 2003
By "cichief" (Kosovo) - See all my reviews
I bought this book at the Pegasus Bridge Museum while on a tour of the D-Day battlesites. I was fascinated by our tour guide, a retired British Brigadier, and his stories of Major John Howard. This book adds to most American's views of the D-Day invasion. I recommend this book even though Mr. Edwards is a bit full of himself, as are most "been there done that" combat veterans.
