Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Hundreds of pilgrims set out form Europe to the Holy Land between 185 and 1099 AD, but of these only eighteen wrote descriptions which have survived. They provide essential background material for the history of Christianity in the Holy Land, as well as for all archaeologists and geographers of the Byzantine and Early Arab period. In this companion volume to Wilkinson's Egeria's Travels, these texts are translated and whereever possible related to archaeological work. With maps and indexes, the reader is provided with a vivid picture of the physical conditions of travel and the development of Christian prayer in the Holy Places.

By A Customer
Wilkinson's 1973 "Egeria's Travels" established him as one of the experts of the field with a commanding knowledge of the sources and locations. This volume only reinforces that opinion among scholars, with its highly detailed first and second hand accounts, lists, maps and drawings, not to mention the gem of an introduction about the sources, travel at the time and devotional practices and motivations. I cannot say how amazingly detailed his work is, making this one-stop reading on the subject. But in case you are still thirsting for more, his detailed bibliographies will point you in the right direction. And did I say it is very readable? Very.

Enjoy!
