Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Worobiec and Spence approach the subject of printing photographs as fine art. Similar in format to Randall Webb and Martin Reed's Alternative Photographic Processes (LJ 4/1/01), their book provides detailed information, including formulas for various solutions. After a helpful discussion of negatives, chemicals, and the fine printing of black-and-white photographs, this aptly titled book takes readers well beyond monochrome prints. The authors discuss the most popular alternative processes, including salt printing and platinum printing, along with hand tinting and airbrushing. Lavishly illustrated with breathtaking prints, Beyond Monochrome clearly demonstrates what master printers can accomplish in the darkroom with a skilled hand and a sensitive eye. Both books are highly recommended for all photography collections in academic and larger public libraries. Beyond Monochrome should be considered an essential purchase for every library where there is interest in darkroom processes. Raymond Bial, Parkland Coll. Lib., Champaign, IL

Product Description
This book is aimed at both the newcomer to monochrome photography and to the more experienced printer who wants to produce fine images using traditional and current printing techniques.

The authors begin by explaining various methods to produce a perfect negative before going on to describe some of the many beautiful and varied processes, that were developed and used during the last century, but still have enormous relevance to today's monochrome photographer. They examine the different methods of using light sensitive material, including the earliest photographic processes, and many other traditional techniques such as gum bichromate, which are gaining favor with many contemporary photographers. They also explain new innovations in film and paper technology including split-toning and split-grading on variable contrast papers.

Some of the subjects discussed: Negative, fine black & white print, liquid photographic emulsions, toning and split-toning, alternative printing processes, salt printing, cyanotype process, kallitype process, argyrotype process, platinum/palladium printing, gum bichromate process, hand tinting, printing out papers, airbrushing, lith printing.

5.0 out of 5 stars a well guided tour through printing techniques, April 7, 2000
By A Customer
You will learn about the basics and much more. Illustrations in this book are well printed and will make you feel what the authors are writing about. The reader is guided through how to produce a printable B&W negative, how to make a high quality B&W print, how to use liquid photographic emulsions and how to tone and split tone your prints. Furthermore, so-called alternative printing processes and the latest forms of them are introduced in a way easy to understand. Mike Ware's new Kallitype process (argyrotype) and his new cyanotype process are introduced to your benefit. There is a fascinating chapter about contact printing with printing out papers including an introduction to using modern B&W papers as printing out papers even if they were not made for such purpose. Lith Printing is explained duly to allow your entre. The three things that I really liked are the following: 1) two-bath development was explained thoroughly and clearly, 2) the usage of several toners (i.e. split toning) was described clearly, and 3) the illustrations were chosen and printed so well that subjects such as contrast change and tone variations became visible experiences supporting the text (Wittgenstein has said:"Some things cannot be explained; they have to be shown"). - There is a book which came to mind when I read "Beyond Monocrome". The book is Randall Webb's and Martin Reed's "Spirits of Salts, a working guide to old photographic processes" by Argentum ISBN 1-902538-05-6. Spirits of Saults complements Beyond Monochrome well when you want to get into alternative processes. If you first read Beyond Monochrome, it will allow you to dive deeper and deeper in the alternative processes by continuing with Spirits of Salts. - Both Tony Worobiec and Ray Spence have experience as teachers. Their expression is clear and they have an ability to focus on the important. - A splendid book that will carry you far.

Beautiful images throughout this book. Good information, but more of a fine art "look at" book than an actual manual to work and learn from.

All in all - a nice book to won.
