Geared Mostly for Newbie Berner Owners, February 21, 2004
This is a book written by a very respected, very experienced Bernese Mtn Dog breeder. If you are new to the Berner breed AND if you are new to living with a dog, this book should be a good find for you. This is a basic, fairly generic book about responsible dog ownership with a focus on how that applies to Berners. It gives lots of generic information about items that many experienced dog people take for granted (how to fit a collar, leash types, how and what to feed a dog, training helps, whelping info, etc). And it includes some breed specific information about Berners that newbies should find useful. The Berner information is not overwhelming for newbies in the way that some of the other, more in-depth Berner books are. Its written very simply, and is basic in its approach to help. It does cover a broad range of basic responsible dog ownership topics. If you're an experienced dog owner and have a good grasp on all the basics of responsible dog ownership, you may not find this book very useful. If you're looking to learn in-depth information about the Bernese Mtn Dog breed, you may not find this book very useful. But if you're looking for a simple, basic dog book to gives you helpful information and an insightful study on caring for your dog, especially if its a Bernese Mtn Dog, then this may be the book for you. While I feel there are better books for Newbies and for hardcore Berner people, this book is very simple and basic information for the new dog owner who happens to buy a Bernese.
