Product Description

Recounts the sinking of the huge freighter the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald in the icy waters of Lake Superior in 1975 and describes subsequent expeditions to the wreck site to uncover clues to her mysterious disappearance.

From the Publisher

On November 10, 1975, SS Edmund Fitzgerald, a giant freighter, sank with its entire crew of 29 aboard, in one of the most violent storms ever witnessed on Lake Superior. In 29 Missing, Kantar tells the "Fitz's" story from the christening in 1958 as the largest ship on the Great Lakes to the expedition in 1995 to recover the ship's bell in what proved to be a moving memorial to the lost crew. Using information from government investigative reports, the book provides a dramatic hour-by-hour account of what transpired during that terrible voyage, including dialogue from actual radio transmissions between the Fitzgerald and the Arthur Anderson, the freighter that followed behind the Fitz. In his passionate retelling of the story, designed primarily for young adults, Kantar provides the facts leading up to the disappearance, detailing the subsequent expeditions to the wreck site as well as the leading theories about the sinking that have been debated by maritime experts.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative/fun book, July 10, 2000
By A Customer
I am an avid reader of books and magazines. And I have to say that 29 Missing is if not the best then one of the best pieces of work I have ever read. It is obvious that the author knows his material. It is not a long book to bore you, but it isn't too short. It covers everything possible. The pictures in this book are amazing. I never knew what a newt suit was before! Also, the map in the book was very useful. I can actually look on a map and find approximetly the Fitz sank! It's great. I am an eighth grader, and I think it's great that there is such a great book that is good for any ages from 12 and 13, or even a man or woman in their fortys and fifties. My mom even liked the book. For anyone of any ages who wants to learn about an amazing ship story, I recomend you read the book 29 Missing by Andrew Kantar.

5.0 out of 5 stars great book!, July 4, 2008
I bought 29 Missing as a gift for my husband, started to read a few pages, and simply could not put it down! I loved the way the author gives all the fascinating details of the Fitzgerald's last voyage and tells about the later expeditions down to the wreck. Some of the other books on the Fitz that I tried to choose from were so dry and included too much technical information. This one tells a story of real human interest that anyone can understand and has photos and a great map so that you can follow the voyage as you read it. When I finished this book, I felt like I had a clear idea of all the reasons why the ship went down and how incredible it was that more ships were not lost that night, especially in the rescue attempts. As far as I am concerned, 29 Missing is the best book you could buy about the Fitzgerald. My husband loved it too!

2.0 out of 5 stars Cursory Look at the Edmund Fitzgerald
This book is only 46 pages, not 70 as advertised. The $14 is far too much to pay for such a small booklet. It just provides a cursory look at the incident. Read more
