Ida Tarbell's investigative reporting exposed the monopolistic practices of Standard Oil Company in the early 1900s, earning her a place among the most celebrated muckrakers in journalism history. Two recent biographies, Kathleen Brady's Ida Tarbell: Portrait of a Muckraker (LJ 9/ 1/84) and Mary Tompkin's Ida M. Tarbell (Twayne, 1974), rescued Tarbell from relative obscurity to help reclaim her role in the development of modern journalism. Editor Kochersberger contributes to the reclamation effort with this collection of 26 selections from Tarbell's writings. Pieces cover a wide range of topics, from the court and wardrobe of the Empress Josephine to the need for rock-dusting legislation to protect coal miners. The selections are arranged into sections on biographical works, business-related subjects, women's issues, and social issues. This volume will make Tarbell's work more accessible to modern scholars and is a welcome addition for library collections that hold her biographies.

Dubbed a muckraker by Teddy Roosevelt, Tarbell was actually a responsible and accomplished journalist who, for 50 years, investigated and interpreted the workings of her world with a passion for fact and the conviction of her ideals. Known best for her investigative reporting on the predatory tactics of John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil, Tarbell was also a talented biographer and a polished essayist. The first full-length biography of Tarbell, by Kathleen Brady, wasn't published until 1984; now, 10 years later, editor Kochersberger has created the first compendium of her writings. Independent from the git-go, Tarbell was a devoted student of science and brought the rigor and objectivity of scientific inquiry to the practice of journalism. In his fine introduction, Kochersberger provides us with a brief biographical sketch and enlightening overview of Tarbell's unusual career.
