4.0 out of 5 stars Donner Pass, March 23, 2000
By Dan. C (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This book i thought was very immformitive about the Southern Pacific's Donner Pass. It told quite a bit about not only the operations on the railroad but also about all of the equipment that is used to keep and mantain the railroad through the harsk Sierra Mt. winters. It also gave a good overview of Southern Pacific as a whole and told about the numerous operations of Southern in and around the Donner Pass area. I would reccomend this book to anyone that is looking for a book with lots of information but without losin the excitment of a good old railroad book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book By Which All Others Should Be Measured, October 27, 2000
If you desire information about Donner Pass and the western portion of the Transcontinental Railroad, this book is the one to acquire. John Signor has researched this book to the Nth degree and included photos published nowhere else. The detail is immense, the story fascinating. Be forewarned, this is NOT the story of the Union Pacific -- it is, however, the story of the Central Pacific and then the Southern Pacific as they both struggled to first build the road and then maintain it throughout the years and the terrible winters over the Sierras. Amazon indicates it will be some time to acquire. You want the book now (as of 10-28-00)? Order it from Railroad Hobbies in Roseville, California. They are on the web. They have copies on their shelves now. Are you a railfan? Railroad Hobbies is a great place to visit when in Roseville.

John Signor, my hat is off to you for this fantastic recording of history. Your work is in-depth and, as far as I'm concerned, an absolute CLASSIC. I once visited a woman who owns what was once a railroaders cabin in Cisco. It is the last cabin on the line in that area. We started talking history and she showed me your book. She treasures its documentation and so do I.

Railfans and historians: you CANNOT go wrong with this book!
