From Library Journal
Prior to its 24th edition, this "standard" for identifying world coins from the late 18th century to the present consisted of one volume. Now part of a 4300-page four-volume series, this title covers only the 20th century, with its three companion volumes covering 1600-1899. This change was necessitated by the sheer amount of additional information provided by hundreds of contributing specialists, the proliferation of commemorative issues by Third World nations, and the expanded time frame. Following a 50-page user's guide to content, grading conditions, attribution aids, dating systems, and so on, the coins are arranged alphabetically by current government entity, from lowest to highest denominations. Catalog numbers are given a Krause-Mishler designation or one based on a standard reference (e.g., R.S. Yeoman). Dates of issue are separately listed under obverse and reverse photos (actual size) and include mintage, metallic contents, weights, notes on varieties, and current retail value in up to four grades of condition. Part of a large coin's reverse may be overlaid by the obverse photo, but this is less of a problem for identification than the small minority of photos that do not adequately illustrate details due to exposure. Recommended as a comprehensive reference source for both novice and experienced numismatists in both public and academic collections.AStanley P. Hodge, Ball State Univ. Lib., Muncie, IN
