Editorial Reviews

Review
"...your book could not have come at a better time -- or be more relevant." -- John T. Harwood, Ph.D., Senior Director, Teaching and Learning with Technology, Penn State University

"Lindsey has taken a substantial step toward making [education about copyright law] more realistic." -- Laureen C. Urquiaga, Brigham Young University law library

Product Description
"Sharing information is the fundamental nature of education. Restricting the sharing of information is the fundamental nature of copyright law." When these opposing objectives collide, administrators, instructors, and students can have difficulty determining legal boundaries. Whether a project involves music, homework assignments, the Internet, distance education, or classroom materials, the newly published Copyright Law on Campus will assist individuals and institutions involved in education as they navigate the complex world of copyright law.

Author Marc Lindsey explores the reasons behind copyright, the exclusive rights granted to the holder, and the duration of those rights. He describes the circumstances that allow unrestricted copying and provides information and resources regarding public domain. He presents the risks of infringement, how to limit vulnerability, and explains when a violation becomes a criminal offense. Often using examples from his own campus experience, he covers the four factors of fair use, and then shows how to analyze them and apply the facts to specific situations.

Extensively researched, Lindsey’s concise reference tool explains how the latest legal developments, such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and the TEACH act, can safeguard educational institutions. He reveals what is required to gain that protection, and how to initiate campus policies and copyright education programs. He also discusses the most conservative interpretation of the statutes with regard to classrooms, including the advantages and disadvantages for establishing those guidelines as policy. With chapters on obtaining permission, the Internet, distance education, and more, this new book is sure to serve as a valuable resource on campuses nationwide.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Resource for Professors, Students and Lawyers, September 3, 2003
By Nancy McCoy (Willis, TX) - See all my reviews
In Copyright Law on Campus, Intellectual Property Lawyer and College Instructor Marc Lindsey provides, in a succinct, easy-to-digest 55 pages, the single most valuable resource on the esoteric law of copyrights that I have ever seen.

The book was designed to provide general information on copyright law as it pertains to the classroom environment, and, clearly, every college professor and administrator should retain a copy in his or her office for easy reference. But the information is also a precious gift for students who struggle throughout their academic careers with copyright questions to which no one around them ever seems to know the answers. In addition, Copyright Law on Campus will be invaluable to practitioners, especially those not so well versed in copyright law, and should give them access to all the answers in this area of the law that they will ever need in their law practices.

Although documented as meticulously and thoroughly as a law review article, Lindsey's book is easy to confront and presents a very pleasant read. It is not nearly as intimidating as the underlying subject matter, and that is its essential virtue.

Copyright Law on Campus covers briefly the source and nature of copyright law, and then goes into the nuts and bolts. The author explains about the duration of copyrights and the public domain, tells you what the risks of infringing are, and explains to you how to actually get permission. He makes sense of the arcane law of ?fair use,? and provides valuable, practical information about the timely topic of copyright law and the internet. He explains several other issues relevant to the University environment, and even provides data on how institutions of higher learning can collect and utilize desperately needed policies regarding copyright issues.

Rarely does one see so many valuable resources collected and presented in one place. Lindsey provides every web site, physical address or resource that anyone with questions about copyright law on campus could ever reasonably need.

I recommend this book to college professors and instructors, administrators, students, and lawyers, in the highest possible terms.
