Product Description
THIS WORLD OF OURS is a world of opposites. There is light and shade, there is heat and cold, there is good and evil, there is God and the Devil. The dualistic conception of nature has been a necessary phase in the evolution of human thought. We find the same views of good and evil spirits prevailing among all the peoples of the earth at the very beginning of that stage of their development which, in the phraseology of Tylor, is commonly called Animism. While the idea of God has received much attention from philosophers and progressive theologians, its counterpart, the dark figure of the Evil One, has been much neglected. And yet the Devil is, after all, a very interesting personality, grotesque, romantic, humorous, pathetic, nay, even grand and tragic. And if we have to declare that the idea of God is a symbol signifying an actual presence in the world of facts, should we not expect that the idea of the Devil also represents a reality? --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Controversial? I think not., April 12, 1999
This book isn't exactly your classic bedtime reading. It's a great book, no doubt about that. But the book tells fact after fact after fact. It reads like an encyclopedia, which is why I find it difficult to doubt anything the author is stating. But again, it's a great book if your just wanting the facts. It vary rarely contains personal thoughts and feelings about the subjects. I recommend it for anyone just wanting the facts, then wanting to base their own opinions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Carus on Evil and the Devil, May 13, 2007
This book has been around for a long time, and it has been republished several times. It is an excellent work on just what the complete title says. It provides a bonus: a number of small line drawings that illustrate works of art from antiquity and bring an extra dimension to the text.

I have read many books on the devil over the years, and this is by far the best.

It belongs in every library, Christian and Satanist alike!
