Editorial Reviews

From Booklist
In this excellent guide, a Colorado sports massage therapist explores the basic components of massage before explaining massage techniques and strokes. Initially, Johnson describes the differences between regular massage and sports massage (in the latter, strokes are deeper and intended to benefit overworked muscles). She addresses the importance of using a proper work surface (not a bed), offers suggestions on scented and unscented oils, and discusses various massage styles. The bulk of the guide contains illustrated instructions for massaging specific body parts. A rundown of various sports and the particular massages suggested for their enthusiasts as well as advice on injury prevention and mental relaxation round out the text. What with sports massage increasing in popularity, Johnson's effort should find a ready audience of both weekend warriors and serious athletes. Sue-Ellen Beauregard

Review
Prevent injury and improve sports and athletic performance through special massage techniques which promote healing. This unusual title promotes self-massage, so techniques don't require two people in order to prove effective. Excellent-quality black and white drawings prove fine illustration of techniques. -- Midwest Book Review

2.0 out of 5 stars Not meant for the professional, July 27, 2003
To say I was dissapointed is an understatement. This is definitely a laymans book. I had wanted a book for reference but this is about as non-specific as you can get. If you are a massage therapist, you do not want this book.

The text follows a logical and practical order to enhance the learning process. Even after using the text, one will always continue to learn. An excellent reference.

I found this book excellent for the massage school student as well as the general layman. The book is taoist in nature where the complex seems simple and the simple complex. Read more
