The American Kennel Club (AKC), the most influential dog club in the United States, registers purebred dogs, supervises dog shows, and is concerned with all dog-related matters including public education. This book educates. It describes the dog's basic needs and the owner's responsibilities. The message is clear: people who cannot fulfill these obligations should not buy a dog. Topics discussed include "think" before buying, care, showing, training, breeding, and illness. While general dog and breed books have most of the same information, AKC's The Complete Dog Book (Howell. 1985. 17th ed.) has it all. Sections pertaining to dog care and training were selected, edited, or expanded for this new book. If The Complete Dog Book is in reference, this could circulate. For libraries with limited funds, the price is right.

Excellent source for people considering purchasing or adopting a dog. Though the book covers only the basics, it provides a solid foundation from which to begin.

This book is an excellent source for any dog owner escpecially for the beginners. It has helped me and my two dogs so so much!
