Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-- A thorough, knowledgable and interesting book for dog lovers. Benjamin stresses throughout that one's goal is to have a dog to be proud of; who is safe and fun; and who knows that you and other humans are top dog. The concepts are taught simply on one or two pages with lists and explanations where needed. Cartoon drawings illustrate concepts humorously while the photographs show them in real-life situations. Although this book could be used by a child to train a dog, Benjamin suggests family and friends' involvement also. But best of all, Benjamin tells why it is so important to train a dog; why certain things need to be learned; and why dog owners must train with the gentlest method that works. This will be invaluable to young (or old) owners of new dogs. --Carole B. Kirkpatrick, Terminal Park Elementary School, Auburn, Wash.

Product Description

This new and expanded edition of Dog Training for Kids gives youngsters the skills they need to make better citizens of their canine companions, while strengthening that all-important human/animal bond. This "home study course" is based on the ability of the child to teach a dog basic obedience as well as some captivating tricks, without having to depend on parental help or expensive equipment. There are beautifully detailed and humorously illustrated instructions on Heeling, Sit Stay, Stand Stay, Down Stay and Come When Called. Counseling is given on seven common but persistent problems; Jumping Up On People, Chewing, Biting, Excessive Barking, Stealing Food and Problem Housebreaking. On the recreational side, there are descriptions of some wonderful tricks which all youngsters can teach their dogs. For those who feel that a future career in dogs would be satisfying and rewarding, Ms. Benjamin presents an overview of eight occupations to jog the reader's interest.

1.0 out of 5 stars out of date techniques, October 29, 2002
By A Customer
The latest version of this book is from 1988 and the book uses lots of traditional, but largely out of date corrections that have been replaced in most obedience training circles with postitive training techniques. I have elected to return the book instead of having my niece learn these dog obedience techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Book on Dog Training, May 16, 2004
A Kid's Review
This book might be old, but it is very helpful. I use it to train all my dogs and some of them are very well behaved. (It even works with stubborn breeds!). DTFK tells about housebreaking, obedience training, tricks, and problem solving. The methods work and the dogs like them. If you get a dog, please buy this book too. Read it cover to cover before you begin with your dog's training, though.
