5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for teaching math concepts to young minds!, July 30, 2002
By S> Lloyd (Coarsegold, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I teach Child Development at the College level. I was sent this book to review. I highly recommend it for parents of children 3-8, classroom teachers, homeschoolers and preschool teachers. Most people believe you should begin teaching math by teaching numbers and counting. Math is very conceptual. Before numbers are taught, children need to understand some relationships in time and space. This book is full of activites/experiments that do just that. An excellent way to begin building conceptual skills in young children (preschool) and a super way to teach and reinforce concepts in young elementary children. Parents also gain an understanding of certain terms such as numeration, seriation, etc. An excellent resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars Count on Math: Activities for Small Hands and Lively Minds, March 30, 2000
Awesome! This book has been easy for me, a homeschooler, to use with both my 3-year old and 5-year old. Though they each are learning at different levels they are having fun and staying entertained. Materials used are easy to find around the house. Includes methods to evaluate progress, book and song lists for each learning unit and, for classroom teachers, a page to send home to parents so they can reinforce the learning going on in the classroom. It's been so great it's time to stop borrowing and buy my own. Highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars math is FUN!!!, August 1, 2007
This curriculum book is packed with fun, concrete experience with math concepts. I find the progression of concepts, with the next chapter building upon discoveries made in the previous chapter very helpful and beneficial. All of the activities utilize the manipulation of real things (leaves, pennies, buttons, water, salt...) All the materials are easy to obtain and anything that needs to be made in advance, a ring toss game for example, is quick and easy and uses houshold items, empty 2L bottles and paper plates cut into rings. Each chapter ends with a Home Connections page which can be copied and sent home to families. It outlines the concepts covered in the chapter, highlights vocabulary words and offers ways the concepts covered in the classroom can be reinforced at home. The "Using This Book" section offers a table for what ages to cover what material and for how long, wich i found slightly odd. Let your own child/children progress at a speed and to a level that is appropriate for them.
