3.0 out of 5 stars Charming book, would make a good gift, June 9, 2007
By StdPudel (Somerville, MA United States) - See all my reviews

All Hat and No Cattle is a broad introduction to Texas culture by a native guide. Anne Dingus does not have the cutting sarcasm of Molly Ivins, but this makes the book appealing to a broader audience. Texans will be able to read this book without feeling insulted, though perhaps gently ribbed. Non-Texans will have some laughs, and learn some too, since the book covers more than cowboys. As a non-Texan, I might have preferred a book that was more insulting to Texans, but that says more about me than the author. The only pain inflicted by All Hat and No Cattle will be from the puns, which are as bad as the author warns us. My favorite chapters were about Texan literature and music. I will definitely be exploring some of the range of selections presented.
