Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly
Williford's principal subject matter is more than common today in short fiction: the marital wreck, done in by adultery and confronting alienation. In this collection of 10 stories, winner of the 1993 Iowa Short Fiction Award, redneck deer-hunters ("A Discussion of Property") and moonlighting yuppies ("Influenza") face a void of values, and it's anyone's guess whether an uptight chiropractor can find healing communion with a brassy Wal-Mart clerk ("Godzilla vs. the Sensitive Man"). Is redemption possible? There is no flash or gimmickry--neither cute ironies nor concealed facts--in Williford's stories, which seem intended to pose a meaningful ambiguity, or at best to summon a grain or two of forlorn hope from the muddy alchemy of relationships. The emotionally stoic conclusion of "Taking Nonie Home" is characteristic: "He stood and walked into the waves, then bent to wash the clay from his knees and the ash from his hands. When he came back, he said, 'Liz, we need to talk.' She picked up the urn. 'I'm ready,' she said."

From Kirkus Reviews
An impressive and highly readable debut from the co-winner of the 1993 Iowa Short Fiction Award (see Manfredi, above). Each of the ten stories here is set in the Southwest, and each depicts the life of an emotionally befuddled, romantically disenfranchised man, but the collection is nevertheless remarkably diverse in point of view and content. In ``Taking Nonie Home,'' a man's mother dies in Mexico while his wife (enthusiastically) and he (reluctantly) shepherd her along the honeymoon route she took with her husband 50 years ago; as they work together to smuggle her now-decaying body back across the border, the wife decides she doesn't want to divorce her bewildered but effective husband after all. In the wonderful ``Fair Day,'' two stalwart little Texas boys whose father has left them go AWOL from school to win their mother a new car at the fair. In ``Hoot's Last Bubble Bath,'' a newly divorced young man helps his alcoholic Uncle Hoot care for dying, deranged Aunt Lily, until a woman Hoot met just before he married Lily comes along to care for all of them--becoming Hoot's next wife and also introducing the nephew to a pretty girl who will be his next. Romantically, the next best thing frequently--and gratifyingly--happens in the remaining tales, except in the closing title piece, when memories of a dead wife are all the sweet, nostalgic protagonist has left. 5.0 out of 5 stars Touching short stories that inspire the imagination!, June 27, 1999
By amdavis@juno.com (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews
This collection of short stories is great reading! The vivid imagery inspire the reader to read on and on until the entire book has been devoured! The stories about families and dysfunction are incredible and heartwrenching at times. I recomend this book for anyone who likes to be led on a journey into the unknown and end up in a place you knew all along.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, eccentric characters-a joy to read!, May 30, 1998
I bought this book because I was in a local bookstore, and I happened upon a reading-in progress. It was Lex Williford reading from "Macauley's Thumb". It sounded so interesting-I bought the book, and I was not dissapointed. The characters are everyday people with everyday problems, though a little eccentric. I have reread the book at least three times since purchasing it, and I see somthing new in the stories with each read. I hope that Mr. Williford has more stories up his sleeve.
