Editorial Reviews

Review

"This unique volume provides an overview of the black queens, madonnas, and goddesses who dominated the history and imagination of ancient times. The authors have concentrated on Ethiopia and Egypt because of the documents of the Nile Valley are voluminous...because the imagination of the world, not just that of Africa, was haunted by these women. They are just as prominent a feature of European mythology as of African reality." --Ivan Van Sertima, editor

THIS IS A WELL RESEARCHED AND VERY SCHOLARLY BOOK. IVAN VAN SERTIMA AS WELL AS THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS WORK HAVE PRODUCED MUCH INSIGHT ON AFRICAN WOMEN IN WORLD HITORY LIKE QUEEN NZINGA, THE CANDACE QUEENS, MAKEDA (QUEEN SHEBA, HATSHEPSUT AND MANY OTHERS. I FEEL THAT THIS WORK IS OF GREAT SIGNIFIGANCE AND SHOULD BE READ BY ALL WHO ARE INTERESTED IN THE ROLE OF AFRICAN WOMEN IN WORLD HISTORY.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another job well-done by Van Sertima!, February 22, 2002
By A Customer
Without being too lengthy, this book thoroughly covers the real and mythical images of the Black woman. It is a wonderful collection of essays from various authors such as the late, great John Henrik Clarke. Historical without afrocentricism. Balanced yet interesting. Do yourself a favor. Purchase the book and order tapes from the back of the book. Another fearless accomplishment by Van Sertima.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for any woman of color, March 2, 2009
This book is a beacon of light in a sea of darkness. By this I mean that there are not enough books the give strong powerful images of Black women in history, and especially of strong black women of history before the "African Holocost". That is what this book does in a singularly powerful way. When I first read this book, I immediately purchased four more copies for the four women in my life that I loved: my girlfriend, my mother, and my two sisters. This book is a godsend. That is why I say bthis book is a must read for any woman of color. This is that strong powerful book that shows strong powerful images. It shows our Joan of Arcs, our Queen Victorias, and our Queen Elizabeths. People need an image of greatness that represents them, and black women receive their image of greatness.

You will not be disappointed if you purchase this book for yourself or for a black woman in your life. This is one of our redemption songs.
