3.0 out of 5 stars Some what helpful buyers beware!, September 12, 2001
By Michael (Bel Air, ca United States) - See all my reviews
First the book is excellent for it's source of general information in Language arts, math, science, etc. However the questions in the mutiple choice and content knowledge are nothing close to the actual questions on the real exam.

The Cliffnotes book is even worse. I studied from three books, Everything a 4th, 5th, and 6th grader needs to know. I studied for a 1.5 months and passed. I didn't study for the art section and human development section. The sections you need to focus on are Math, language arts, science, and social studies. These area are worth the most points.

The key to passing the MSAT is to answer all the essay questions.
Please e-mail me and I can explain everything you need to know.
I also passed the R.I.C.A. and I can tell you about that as well.

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent resource, lacks California information, July 18, 1999
By A Customer
If you can pass the sample tests in this book, you can pass the MSAT. I used this book, the E.D. Hirsch series, "What your second grader (third grader, fourth grader, etc) needs to know", and the Cliffs Notes MSAT preparation book. THe Cliffs Notes book is also available from Amazon.com but you need to really search for it. Of all the books, I thought this one was the best. To avoid confusion, I'm going to call this book the REA book. It is packed with information. It had so much information that I had a hard time retaining it, even after just finishing the page. I would use the "what your ___ grader needs to know" books to simplify the material and chop it into digestible blocks, and then go back and review the REA book to see what I had missed. This book is lacking a section on California History. That section is available on the Cliffs Notes. Cliffs Notes and the REA book have decent math reviews. I thought both did well on the literature and language portion. REA's history review was substantially better. Cliffs Notes and REA both recommend a three month study schedule. I passed the test on my first try. I was very glad I used the 3 month study schedule, it takes about that long to reaquaint yourself with all the information you once knew but forgot about 10 years ago.

4.0 out of 5 stars A VERY comprehensive review book, February 19, 2002
By A Customer
I highly recommend the REA study guide above the other MSAT test prep books. Its History and Literature sections are very detailed and provide ample review, if you have more than a month to dedicate to studying. However, if you are pressed for time, I would recommend the Cliff's Notes MSAT prep guide, which is more of an outline of what you need to know. I also found the practice tests in the Cliff's book to be more similar to those on the actual MSAT. Good luck!
