4.0 out of 5 stars Significantly Improved from 3rd Edition, March 27, 2000
By A Customer
The 4th edition is much more current about methods and techniques than the 3rd edition. Materials covered span various types of tools and techniques that may be used to perform specific activities (i.e., ventilation). The description of understanding necessary for satisfactory completion of the certification exams is clearly written. Additionally, everyone who plans to pursue Fire Fighter certification in Pa. should use the 4th Ed. of "Essentials" because it has been selected as the reference for all testing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to needed skills, March 24, 2000
The Fourth Edition of IFSTA Essentials is very different from the third edition. Fourth Edition depends more on tables and pictures, and less on text. Thus, in more or less the same number of pages, the reader gets a wider view of the tasks performed by firefighters, but doesn't get as much depth into any one topic. Readers familiar with the Third Edition (like me) will feel something is missing or has been glossed over. Readers without that background will gain a good basic knowledge of the skillset used in the fire service.

5.0 out of 5 stars Firefighter Review, April 22, 2002
By A Customer
The book is excellent in its layout. Is easy to follow and is a very imformative piece of necessary literature for any firefighter taking firefighter 1. Is very informative on NFPA regulations and guidelines. I was impressed with the detail that was given in the book, our instructor was impressed with this book as well.
